Just when we all thought the grand idea of burying I-84 in Hartford had been scuttled by the penny-pinching DOT, along comes U.S. Rep. John Larson, D-1st District, with an ambitious plan to build an even bigger tunnel that buries both interstates and extends into East Hartford, all with federal dollars.

Tall, soft-spoken and broad-shouldered, Matthew Corey’s callused hands are a testament to the hard work he does and how proud he is to do it. He’s dressed down in a t-shirt and jeans, in a corner booth of McKinnon’s Irish Pub in downtown Hartford, just a few blocks from the state Capitol.

(Updated 7 a.m. Thursday) Connecticut’s Congressional delegation joined other Democratic representatives Wednesday in a sit-in on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives in an effort to force a vote on gun control legislation.

A group of government watchdog organizations called upon the House Committee on Ethics last month to release a report on free trips to Azerbaijan taken by 10 members of Congress in 2013. They might have to wait a while on that request. The Ethics Committee has no meetings scheduled and only a single bill for consideration.

Connecticut’s senators, Christopher Murphy and Richard Blumenthal, have introduced legislation that would create five-year grant programs to fund partnerships between schools and community-based organizations, intended to bolster everything from prenatal care and early education to college and career readiness programs.

In anticipation of the 50th anniversary of the first attempted Civil Rights march from Selma to Montgomery, the U.S. House of Representatives will vote this week to approve H.R. 431, which would award Congressional Gold Medals to participants in that march or the two that followed.
