Republicans in Connecticut have long perfected the art of holding two contradictory thoughts in their minds at once: they are Republicans, but they are also not Republicans, if you know what I mean.
It’s a convenient way of thinking, and it serves them well. Maybe it serves all of us well. Here are all these folks, these friends and neighbors, these decent and kind people, whose political party both is and isn’t the monster down in D.C. enabling a dangerous loose cannon of a president as he — and they — gleefully undermine small-d democratic norms.

House and Senate Republican leaders are looking to quickly reach consensus on an overhaul of tax policy this week in hopes of sending a final bill to President Donald Trump before year’s end.
Both chambers have approved separate tax measures and must now negotiate a final bill that would be brought before the House and Senate — without amendment — for a final up-or-down vote.

EAST HAVEN, CT — The losing mayoral candidate in November’s hotly contested, close election filed a lawsuit in New Haven Superior Court this week asking for a recount and claiming there were improprieties before and during the event by town officials, including Mayor Joe Maturo.

Change was in the air for many districts in Connecticut Tuesday and both major parties were celebrating some local victories as results started coming in. But as the evening wore on, it became clear that Democrats were picking up seats and gaining control of councils and school boards in a lot of Republican towns, mirroring similar gains being reported in other states.
