The mass shooting at a high school in Florida has renewed calls for government action against gun violence and once again put a spotlight on families who lost children five years ago at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Two of them — Nicole Hockley and Mark Barden — were at the White House this week participating in a “listening session” that President Donald Trump held to learn from those who have lived through such tragedies.

Manufacturing Continues As Bright Spot In Connecticut’s Economy

EAST HARTFORD, CT — There are about 13,600 job openings in Connecticut manufacturing right now, and even though the state has beefed up its community college training programs and increased its tax credits, there’s no way they will all be filled.

It’s not as if we don’t have enough to worry about in my corner of the state. Good-paying unskilled jobs are scarce, thanks to the lack of manufacturing and the predominance of the service-sector economy. Towns struggle to fund essential services and repair infrastructure because of a shrinking tax base and an equally dwindling stream of aid from the state.
