Snow covered Matianuck Ave., Windsor

Based on the conditions and the amount of snow fall Wednesday, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy ordered all first-shift non-essential employees to stay home.

“I don’t like the term non-essential because I think everyone does important work, but with poor road conditions I don’t want to put anyone in harms way,” Malloy said. “I would also encourage private employers to follow the state’s lead.”

In addition, Malloy banned tandem tractor trailer trucks from state highways until conditions improve.

“With heavy snow falling across the state and a mix of sleet and freezing rain on the way, I am asking residents to avoid unnecessary travel,” Malloy said. “The bottom line is if you can stay home or work from home, please do.”

There are 837 trucks clearing the roads under state jurisdiction and 77 National Guardsmen are standing by if their help is necessary. There have been 300 calls to the state police, but no fatalities and only one injury.

Bradley International Airport is still open, but about half the flights have been canceled, Malloy said at his 8 a.m. briefing.

“Bottomline is if you can, stay home,” Malloy said.

Not everybody is a non- essential state employee like you Dannel. Most of us have to go to work to pay your LARGEST TAX INCREASE IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY.

I worked. It was a good day to stay off the roads. Excellent call by the governor.
