CEA Mark Waxenberg, a former East Hartford math teacher, will succeed Connecticut Education Association Executive Director Mary Loftus Levine, who retired at the end of June.

Waxenberg previously taught at East Hartford Middle School and served two terms as the CEA’s president beginning in 1988. He also served as a policy director to former Gov. Lowell P. Weicker.

According to a CEA press release, Waxenberg retired from the union last year, but decided to return as the organization’s executive director to help implement the state’s education reform.

“Connecticut’s new law has the potential to be a model for the nation. However, it can only reach its potential if it is carefully rolled out with full consideration given to every consequence for students and teachers,” he said in a statement.

Waxenberg will join Sheila Cohen, who takes over as CEA’s president on Aug. 1.

“Mark is the right person for the right job at the right time. I’ve known Mark for a great many years. I look forward to working with him at this critical time in education reform because his knowledge base is vast and his dedication to teachers, children, and public education is indisputable,” Cohen said.
