An audit of the new Diebold AccuVote Optical Scan voting machines used by some voters this November found the machines made few errors, Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz announced Thursday. The University of Connecticut audit found that there were small disagreements between the results counted by the machines and the results counted by auditors looking at the printed ballots afterward.

Radio Report on New Voting Technology

by Dori Smith | November 16, 2006 6:11pm

A Talk Nation Investigation into AccuVote Optical Scan Machines used in the Second District recount reveals a lack of clear protocols on the handling of ballots and machines. There were paper trails, but also a trail of confusion over who should have access to the machines. Despite warnings in October from state voting machine evaluators the Secretary of State failed to provide adequate information.

Do the New Voting Machines Pass the Test?

by Christine Stuart | November 15, 2006 10:11pm

In the 10 towns in the Second Congressional District where the new Diebold Accu-Vote machines were used there were nowhere near the vote counting mistakes made in towns that used old lever voting technology, Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz said Wednesday. In the 10 towns using the new machines that will be used next November throughout the state, there were 18 total changes made. The 18 changes pale in comparison to 306 changes made in the 55 towns that used the old voting technology.

New Voting Machines and the Second CD

by Christine Stuart | November 14, 2006 7:11pm

More towns in the Second Congressional District were chosen as test sites for the new optical scan voting technology than any other Congressional District. Of the 25 towns chosen at least 10 of them were in the Second Congressional District where there has been a recanvas in the race between Democrat Joe Courtney and Republican incumbent Rob Simmons. Coincidence?

Say It Ain’t So Joe

by Christine Stuart | November 13, 2006 10:11am

When asked if he would consider caucusing with Senate Republicans the day following his election victory over Democratic candidate Ned Lamont, U.S. Senator Joseph Lieberman said “No.” But when asked Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press” if he would consider leaving the Democratic party to become an independent like Vermont Sen. Jim Jeffords did when he left the Republican party to in 2001, Lieberman didn’t rule out a swing to the right to give Republicans control of the Senate.

He hasn’t taken a day off in three months, but Mayor John DeStefano got right back to work after the end of his three-year quest for the governor’s office. He vowed Thursday that the city is “ready to move” on a new policing policy toward immigrants and hinted that the cops’ round-‘em-up “ID-Net” program may have reached its end.

A few years ago Congressman John Larson, D-1st., said there’s a saying amongst the Connecticut Congressional delegation: “In Dodd We Trust.” The saying which is a play on words from the dollar bill, may be appropriate if the Democrats win a majority in the Senate, in which case Sen. Christopher Dodd would ascend to the chairmanship of the Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee.

Democrats Win Veto Majority in General Assembly

by Christine Stuart | November 9, 2006 10:11am

Republican Gov. M. Jodi Rell may have crushed Democratic challenger John DeStefano on Tuesday, but the Democrats gained enough seats to hold a two-thirds veto majority in the General Assembly. Senate President Donald Williams said the veto majority gives the Democrats the ability to push issues such as access to health care and state contracting reform.

Lieberman Touts Bipartisanship

by Christine Stuart | November 8, 2006 6:11pm

dayafterOne of the many things U.S. Senator Joseph Lieberman will be doing when he returns to Washington DC is continuing his attempt to put an end to the genocide in Darfur. “It deeply agitates me,” he said Wednesday, hours after his independent victory over Democratic candidate Ned Lamont and Republican Alan Schlesinger. Lieberman said along with conservative Republican Sam Brownback of Kansas he’s been trying to get the United Nations to be more aggressive in ending the “slaughter of innocence in Darfur.” He said he strongly feels that if the United Nations is not successful in its mission, then it should bring in NATO to help. Click here to read more about the genocide and here to see what Lieberman said about it in the past. Lieberman said ending the genocide in Darfur is a “classic example” of how he’s been able to work across party lines to get things done, which seemed to be the main theme in his post-election briefing.
