UConn Names New Police Chief

Bond Commission To Authorize $18 Million For UConn Tech Park

State Repairs Prison as it Shuts it Down

It was scheduled to close, taken off the chopping block, and recently ordered closed again. But throughout, the state has moved forward with a $34,488 project to repair its perimeter fence.

For Now, Bergin Correctional Finds Itself Off Chopping Block

Hugh McQuaid File Photo The state announced two weeks ago that it would be closing a Mansfield prison by July 1 under a contingency plan if a labor agreement could not be reached with the state employees’ unions. But now that a tentative agreement is in place, officials say the prison is off the chopping block, at least in the short term.

The closure of Bergin Correctional Institution was one of the more serious options Gov. Dannel P. Malloy presented as part of his “Plan B” budget if he could not get the $2 billion in concessions he needed from the state employee unions, Office of Policy and Management Undersecretary of Criminal Justice Michael P. Lawlor said on May 10.
