OP-ED | Don’t Throw Child Care Out With The Bathwater
by Kathy Queen | February 3, 2012 4:34pm
Gov. Dannel P. Malloy wants 2012 to be the year of education reform, with a particular focus on early childhood and preschool.

OP-ED | Money Race 2012: McMahon Reinventing Herself, Bysiewicz in Decline
by Susan Bigelow | February 3, 2012 12:46pm
It’s never a great idea to read too much into fundraising totals. Dollars aren’t votes, and plenty of candidates have found that the amount of money they raised and spent didn’t solve their other problems. After all, no one outspent Linda McMahon in 2010, but her money didn’t translate into a win or even into a close loss.

OP-ED | Goodbye To The Status Quo
by Rae Ann Knopf | February 3, 2012 10:18am
To any skeptics who asked last year whether Gov. Dannel P. Malloy truly intended to make the 2012 legislative session “the education session”, those doubts have been answered. Even before the formal opening of the session, we’ve seen enormous strides toward reforming education in Connecticut.

OP-ED | The “National Popular Vote” Interstate Compact Is a Bad Idea
by Bill Cibes | January 29, 2012 10:21pm
Connecticut should not join the proposed Interstate Compact to substitute the outcome of the National Popular Vote (NPV) for the current Electoral College procedure for electing the President. In addition to the reasons recently outlined on this site by Representative John Hetherington, this Compact should be opposed because:

Ode To Politics: Week of Jan. 29
by Jennifer Just | January 29, 2012 12:24am
Time to look back on the week that was—
At political news that caused the buzz.
GOTTA start off with the one most whacko –
Will Mayor Maturo (ie “Mr. Taco”)
Be compelled to leave his post?
He’s not a very gracious host.
We should also mention
He’s got a pretty cushy pension.

OP-ED | Swan Song Of The Independent
by Susan Bigelow | January 27, 2012 11:53am
We love our moderate independents here in Connecticut, or at least former Rep. Christopher Shays, now running for U.S. Senate, sure hopes we do. “The Connecticut I know values independence and straight talk, not someone who is a sure vote for his party, be it Democrat or Republican,” Shays said during his announcement speech this Wednesday, calling on the restless legacy of the man he’s running to replace. Indeed, Shays sometimes seemed like a Republican Joe Lieberman during his time in Congress; pro-war, socially moderate, fiscally conservative with a pragmatic streak and prone to pointing to his own independence as his greatest virtue.

OP-ED | When In Doubt, Blame The Media
by Sarah Darer Littman | January 26, 2012 11:36pm
I’m starting to feel like the number one advice given to every GOP politician by strategists these days is “if you mess, blame the press.” From a party that supposedly champions personal responsibility and accountability, we’ve watched Sarah Palin whine about the “lame stream media” because she was grossly unprepared to answer the kinds of questions legitimately asked of a vice-presidential candidate (of course, now she’s quite happily raking in the bucks as a member of the LSM).

OP-ED | Voting Rights: ‘Disenfranchise’ This!
by Terry Cowgill | January 26, 2012 11:27pm
As a professional scribbler, one of my end-of-year chores includes assembling a list of overused words and phrases — you know, those seductive or misleading utterances that cause paroxysms of eye-rolling in those of us peck at the keyboard.

OP-ED | Fix a Flawed System – Use the National Popular Vote
by Andrew Fleischmann | January 25, 2012 9:00pm
The National Popular Vote (NPV) initiative has gained ground across the U.S. because it does something overwhelming majorities of Americans in every state support: It ensures that the person who gets the most votes for President wins. Rep. John Hetherington’s recent criticisms of the initiative published on this site are so flawed that it’s hard to know where to start.

OP-ED | National Popular Vote Compact: Empowering the Political Fringe
by John Hetherington | January 23, 2012 10:30am
Almost certainly we will see a major push this year to have Connecticut join the so-called National Popular Vote compact. Under the terms of the compact, each subscribing state would agree to cast its electoral votes for the presidential candidate receiving the largest popular vote nationally regardless of the choice of that state’s voters.
