Brandon McGee supporters believe it was their hard work that elevated their candidate to victory in the court-ordered revote of the 5th Assembly District. But Leo Canty’s supporters believe it was the infusion of nearly $42,000 during the last few days of the campaign from an out-of-state special interest group affiliated with the controversial school-reform advocate Michelle Rhee.

A school reform group with ties to StudentsFirst, the organization founded by the controversial former chancellor of the Washington, D.C. school system, is pouring nearly $32,000 into the Oct. 2 Democratic primary for the 5th Assembly District seat.

(Updated 8:02 a.m., Thursday) Judge A. Susan Peck decided Wednesday afternoon to open the sealed ballot of an elderly Windsor woman initially thought to be deceased after weighing her right to privacy and her right to have her vote counted in the tied 5th Assembly District race.

Rumors of an elderly Windsor woman’s death have been greatly exaggerated, and since she’s still alive it’s possible her vote which is still sealed could decide the Democratic primary contest between Leo Canty and Brandon McGee.
