9% of CT’s Registered Voters Are Hispanic

Secretary of the State Denise Merrill says that Hispanics account for nearly 9 percent of all registered voters in the state.
In the first eight months of 2012 more than 7,500 new Hispanic voters registered in Connecticut, according to Merrill.
The communities with the highest numbers of registered Hispanic voters are Bridgeport with more than 25,519 registered, and Hartford, with 24,911. New Haven has 12,541 and Waterbury has 15,072.
Among the more than 176,000 registered voters of Hispanic origin, some 90,012 are registered as Democrats, while 71,488 are registered as unaffiliated voters, and 14,449 are registered Republicans.
The reason the number of Hispanic voters is tracked by Merrill’s office is based on the federal Voting Rights Act, which says communities must provide a ballot in another language such as Spanish, if more than 5 percent of the voting public speaks that language.
That means ballots in Spanish must be provided in Bridgeport, East Hartford, Hartford, Meriden, New Britain, New Haven, New London, Waterbury, and Windham.
