Congressional Races In Fourth and Fifth Too Close to Call

A poll released Friday has Republican state Senator’s Dan Debicella and Sam Caligiuri with slight leads over their incumbent Democratic opponents, U.S. Reps. Jim Himes and Chris Murphy.
The Merriman River Group poll shows Debicella with 48 percent over Himes, who has 46.1 percent. Meanwhile, the poll has Caligiuri leading Murphy 46.9 percent to 45.5 percent.
The 4th District poll surveyed 571 likely voters between Oct. 24 and Oct. 26 and has a 4.1 percent margin of error. In that district, 4.6 percent of those polled said they were still undecided.
“The fourth congressional district continues to be a tight fight within our margin of error,” says Matthew Fitch, the poll’s executive director. Fitch added that while Himes has fared well with women and highly educated voters, he has struggled with male voters and those who identify with the Tea Party movement.
In the 5th District, 3.7 percent of the 595 voters were undecided. That poll has a 4 percent margin of error.
“With less than a week to go the fifth congressional district is up for grabs,” Fitch said. “It appears that Representative Chris Murphy has closed the gap in recent days. That’s a difficult feat for an incumbent to do, but he has yet to break 50 percent at any point in our polling and time is running out.”
