The Federal Emergency Management Agency extended the deadline to register for Storm Sandy disaster assistance from Dec. 31 to Jan. 28, 2013.

“With more than $20 million in federal aid approved already, there is clearly a need for many residents for assistance,” Malloy said in a statement. “Extending this deadline will ensure that any resident or business affected by Storm Sandy has ample time to apply for assistance.”

So far 11,400 residents from Middlesex, Fairfield, New Haven, and New London counties and the two tribal nations have registered for disaster assistance. More than $9.6 million has been approved for housing assistance, more than $620,000 has been approved to cover disaster-related needs such as medical expenses, and more than 8,700 disaster loan applications have been approved by the Small Business Administration totaling $11.6 million.

Those who have not registered can visit www.disasterassistance.gov or call 1-800-621-3362.
