While lawmakers are at the Capitol Wednesday trying to pass legislation to spark economic growth, officials from Google and Intuit will be across town at the Connecticut Science Center helping small businesses design their own websites.

Statistics show about 53 percent of small businesses don’t have a website, which is one of the reasons Google spearheaded the “Connecticut Get Your Small Business Online” initiative, Scott Levitan, of Google‘s Small Business Engagement division, said.

This program, which offers one year of free web hosting, web design, and domain name ownership, is seen as a way to support business in Connecticut.

“This program is making it fast, easy and free for small businesses to get online and grow,” Gary Briggs, vice president of consumer marketing at Google, said.

Joseph Brennan, vice president of government affairs for the Connecticut Business and Industry Association, said Google and Intuit are hosting similar events in other states.

“Google reached out to us and other groups in Connecticut. We sponsored it because the program itself is focused on small businesses,” Brennan said.

There are two ways for a business to take advantage of this program one is they can come to the event and sign up at the event, or they can go to http://www.Connecticutgetonline.com and all the resources will be there.

The program is free for the first year, but will cost $6.99 per month at the end of the year. For businesses that are interested in advertising on Google or other websites Google has a $75 credit to try out online advertising.

In order to start advertising, “Business should build a good traffic site,“ Levitan said. “We will have experts from across the country on hand, to give a helping.”

The Connecticut Get You Business Online event will be held at the Connecticut Science Center 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26.
