(Updated 12:28 p.m.) Labor Commissioner Glenn Marshall resigned last week citing “personal family matters.”

In a brief statement Tuesday, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy thanked Marshall for his service and announced that Deputy Labor Commissioner Dennis Murphy will head the agency until a replacement is found.

“I want to thank Glenn for his service to the people of Connecticut,” Malloy said. “The Department of Labor has made significant progress over the last eighteen months with Glenn as Commissioner, and I wish him well on whatever opportunity comes next.”

Marshall, the former head of the carpenters union, was very complimentary of the governor in his resignation letter.

“In the sixteen months that I have been Commissioner, I am proud of the progress that has been made, not only within the Department of Labor, but throughout your entire administration,” Marshall wrote. “I commend you for your leadership as Governor and I have been proud to be part of your team.”

Marshall, appointed by Malloy in January 2011, is the second high ranking state official to depart suddenly this year. The first was Deb Heinrich, a former lawmaker who served as the governor’s nonprofit liaison.

Marshall probably wanted to do the right thing and let us vote so Malloy told him to resign!
