Photo courtesy of the campaign State Sen. Gary LeBeau, D-East Hartford, sent an email to supporters Monday morning to let them know he is bowing out of the governor’s race.

“While disappointed that my gubernatorial campaign has ended, I feel stronger and more energized by the strong support that you and hundreds of others have given to me. I hope to continue to work with you on issues that concern you,” LeBeau wrote in his email.

LeBeau, co-chairman of the legislature’s Commerce Committee, said he got into the race to make sure jobs and economic development were part of the debate.

“You know, last year I started this campaign with the idea that jobs and Connecticut’s economic future are the most important challenges facing our state.  At that time, I,—drawing on my many years of experience chairing the legislative Commerce Committee—was virtually the only one saying this. Now, every candidate has recognized the importance of this issue. I will continue to fight for a more competitive and prosperous Connecticut, most likely by seeking reelection as state senator.”

With LeBeau out the race for governor on the Democratic side is still crowded. It leaves cable executive Ned Lamont, Stamford Mayor Dannel Malloy, Ridgefield First Selectman Rudy Marconi, Simsbury First Selectman Mary Glassman, former House Speaker James Amann, and Juan Figueroa, former Universal Health Care Foundation president. Amann is still the only declared candidate, the rest are just exploring a run for the office.

I believe he’s in his mid-50s. I know he’s a retired East Hartford teacher and was still teaching when I covered the town in 2004-2006. I stand corrected he’s 62.
