Malloy Mum On Donovan, Supportive of Esty

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy was careful Wednesday morning not call on House Speaker Chris Donovan to withdraw his name from the Working Families Party ballot line in the 5th Congressional District.

“I think Democrats, Republicans, and Independents should support Elizabeth Esty,” Malloy said after speaking to a group of school superintendents at the Legislative Office Building.

“Anything less is not representative of progressive politics in Connecticut.”

The executive board of the AFL-CIO will meet today at 4 p.m. to discuss their endorsement in the race.

Esty won the Democratic nomination last week, but Donovan’s name may still appear on the ballot under the Working Families Party line. Donovan is on vacation and has not indicated whether he will move forward with his candidacy.

Some progressives have called for him to keep his name on the ballot, while others have asked him to withdraw it.

Earlier this week, John Olsen, president of the AFL-CIO, encouraged his members to get behind Esty.
