CTNJ file photo In an unusual move, Sen. Ed Meyer, D-Guilford, walked into the middle of the Senate circle Saturday during a debate to take a phone call from his wife.

Sen. Bob Duff, D-Norwalk, who was presiding over the Senate at the time called Meyer out of order.

“The only thing out of order is this filibuster,” Meyer recalled saying. The phone conversation with his wife was “more relevant, and significant than the filibuster conversation.”

“I’m doing the Lords work,” Meyer said. “This is the biggest disservice we can do to our constituents.”

However, Sen. Leonard Fasano, R-North Haven, disagreed. “I thought it was very disrespectful.”

“He didn’t like that we were questioning bills,” Fasano said. “Deals can be worked out and bills can start to move, but he has to understand it’s a two-party system.”

In part it was a filibuster, Fasano said, but he admitted it’s the only tool the minority has at times to get things done.

Meyer said he was frustrated because only one of his 12 environmental bills were able to get through the process Saturday.

“I’m doing my best to shake up this institution,” Meyer said.

Thank You Sen Meyer,

The sooner Our WIMPY Senate Democratic “SUPER MAJORITY” stop using the very stupid idea that everything in the their “August Body” has to be done with a “CONSENSUS” the sooner it will be worthy of the title SENATE.

Right now it looks like any other country club with 36 snobby old do nothing geezers who can’t get out of theor own way.

Doing the Lord’s work? Clueless. Any wonder why folks are cynical about anything coming out from under the dome these days?

He should apologize to Sen. Duff and the entire Senate body. This behavior is never acceptable in any stage of life - let alone the chamber.

Senator Duff is a Democrat too.  Senator Meyer comment and behavior was definitely “OUT OF ORDER”.  I hope Senator Meyer has someone to oppose him this election.  We need to have a choice in who is representing us.  I will vote for Anyone but Senator Meyer in District 12. The 12th District, includes the towns of Branford, Durham, Guilford, Killingworth, Madison and North Branford

Meyer is cool.

A filibuster is not the reason Meyer isn’t getting any of his bills done.  He ticked off Rep. Sharkey so everything he touches will die in the House anyway.

Does anyone else feel sorry for the constituents of this man who shows so little respect for his position? He may well be right…the process may be in need of fixing. But to take a call in the center of the circle, stating that the call was more important? Add that to his actions towards a fellow legislator, his penchant for being not only a hot reactor but an over-reactor and saddest of all, being a victim of his last conversation (whoever it was to get his ear last, whether right or wrong) and you have someone who appears to be falling apart before the public’s eyes. He was an elected official in NY? Perhaps it is time for him to return to NY now?

Last year the Democrats were playing minesweeper.

Now they are verbally assaulting each other.

I’m looking forward to the 2011 session. Duels among politicians were never outlawed in CT.

I say end the filiuster as gentlemen according to the Code Duello.
