Special Election On The Horizon

State Rep. Timothy O’Brien submitted his resignation to Secretary of the State Denise Merrill Monday as he prepares to be sworn in as New Britain’s next mayor.

O’Brien’s resignation will effective Tuesday, Nov. 15, which gives Gov. Dannel P. Malloy 15 days to issue a Writ of Special Election for the 24th General Assembly seat, which represents New Britain and a part of Newington.

The special election must be held within 46 days of the issuance of the writ. 

New Britain’s charter does not allow its mayor to hold another job, no matter what that job may be, according to New Britain Democrats. Of course, New Britain’s charter and what it says about how many jobs a mayor can hold was the subject of debate last year when former Republican Mayor Timothy Stewart was seeking the state Senate seat vacated by Department of Administrative Services Commissioner Donald DeFronzo.

This will be the second special election in a less than a year for some New Britain voters.
