Prison Population Reaches All-Time High

According to Judiciary Committee Co-Chairman Rep. Michael Lawlor’s office the state’s prison population reached an all-time high Tuesday.
The total population held by the Department of Corrections Tuesday was 19,875 inmates. This surpasses the previous record high number of 19,848 inmates set on October 26, 2007. Here is the daily breakdown of inmates.
One year ago on January 29, 2006, the total inmate population was 18,287. This represents an increase of 1,588 inmates in two years. On September 21, 2007, the day that Gov. Rell ordered her ban on parole, the total inmate population was 19,194. On the day that Gov. Rell lifted the parole ban, January 27, 2008, the inmate population was 19,824.
On July 23, 2007, the day of the Cheshire murders, the total inmate population was 18,864, meaning that the prison population has increased by 1,011 inmates since the Cheshire murders. If Connecticut police and courts can see to it a man it put in prison for resisting being mugged on his own property, there are too many people going to prison that should not be.
