Five More Hospitals Enroll In Charter Oak

Gov. M. Jodi Rell announced this past Friday that five more hospitals have agreed to accept the state-subsidized Charter Oak Health Insurance.

Yale-New Haven Hospital, Bridgeport Hospital, Greenwich Hospital, Saint FrancisCare in Hartford, and the UConn Health Center/John Dempsey Hospital in Farmington are the five new hospitals that have agreed to accept the insurance. The Hospital of Saint Raphael in New Haven and Saint Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury had previously agreed to accept it.

Lawmakers like Sen. Jonathan Harris, D-West Hartford, have expressed concern about the lack of doctors and hospitals willing to sign up for the new state insurance plan, which will cover uninsured adults in the state regardless of their medical history. On Aug. 4, Rell defended her plan saying that building a network of doctors doesn’t happen overnight.

“We are doing exactly what we have set out to do and that is to build a robust health care network for the much-needed Charter Oak Health Plan,” Rell said in Friday’s press release. “It is gratifying to see these outstanding hospitals become our partners in bringing health care coverage to the thousands who need it.”

Charter Oak enrollees will have three plans to chose from: Aetna Better Health, Americhoice, and Community Health Network.

More information about the doctor networks and hospitals will be released next week at the Medicaid Managed Care Council meeting 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20.

On the backs of the HUSKY children...why always them. It is a well known fact that 2 of the 3 companies that signed up to take over the Husky/Charter Oak program have milked many commercial providers out of payments for services rendered for years in this State. No wonder providers don't want to sign up for Charter Oak. I make an exception for CHN, they have cared for the HUSKY population over the last several years with some heart and perhaps some profit too. Brillant, sign up the hospitals first...that way when a Charter Oak member can't find a provider, they can just go to a hospital ER for non-emergencies at a huge cost to the State and eventually our HUSKY children. Yikes, to think these are the people who are running our state. This is just a screen to make the Gov. look good until the house of cards falls. On the backs of the kids Jodi! Don't worry about the kids...we have DCF looking out for them. Small business owners are more important anyway.

The real question is, did the Hospitals sign up for all three plans or just one? The next question would be what the State held over their heads to pressure them to sign.
