CTNewsJunkie wants your opinions

by Christine Stuart | January 5, 2009 8:00 AM

Are you passionate about issues related to Connecticut? Send us an op-ed. Our goal is to increase civic engagement by providing a home for a statewide community conversation.

Op-eds should be 250 to 700 words, and we will be happy to include any relevant and appropriate links or artwork you offer.

CTNewsJunkie reserves the right to refuse any submission. Also, in order to be considered for publication, we'll need full disclosure. Along with your op-ed, the following information must be included:

-your full name and a phone number so we can verify your information;
-town of residence, unless you have compelling reason that we don't publish it;
-the name of any organization or company with which you or your family members are either employed, affiliated, or invested;
-any federal, state, local, municipal, county, or quasi-public office held by you or a family member.

Also, it helps to put a face on your ideas. If you send us your organization's logo and a photo of yourself, we'll publish those with your commentary.

Please send submissions to cstuart05 at comcast.net.

Curious Delivery Made To Press Room

by Christine Stuart | November 24, 2008 2:07 PM

(Updated 4:30 p.m.) As the General Assembly gathered Monday to debate what to do about the state's $300 million budget deficit in a special session, CTNewsjunkie.com editor Christine Stuart was greeted by a Fed-Ex delivery man in the Capitol Press Room.

The delivery man asked her to sign for a package from the Secretary of State's office. Inside the package was the annual 2008 State Register and Manual, which lists all the elected officials in the state. The press office receives copies of this book every year. However, they aren't usually delivered by Fed-Ex since one of the Secretary of State's offices is just four floors below the Capitol Press Room and the other one is across the street.

Let's just say it left us scratching our head.

Av Harris, Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz's spokesman, said Monday afternoon that two copies of the manuals were inadvertently shipped to the Capitol Press Room and that the office apologizes to the taxpayers of Connecticut for its error.

Op-Ed: Speaking Out Against A Constitutional Convention

by Rebecca Saxon | September 23, 2008 1:40 PM

Editor's note: The views expressed in this editorial are those of the author.

In November vote NO to question one on the Connecticut ballot asking if there should be a constitutional convention. This convention would take away rights, not add them, and give lobbyists and special interest groups a direct way to alter Connecticut's constitution.

State legislators appoint delegates to the convention and these delegates can propose anything they want to be added or taken out of the constitution.

Not only does this put our rights up for grabs, but it would take a year of the state legislature's time to plan and carry out the convention.

Op-Ed: Hearing William Coleman's Hunger Strike

Editor's note: The views expressed in this editorial are those of the author.

Connecticut prison inmate William Coleman has been on a hunger strike for a year and started refusing liquids on Tuesday, which means without intervention, he may not make it to the weekend.

In Connecticut, where autonomy in medical decisions and free speech rights do not particularly persuade in court, the Department of Correction won the power to force-feed Coleman in January. They have not acted on it, but may before the end of this week.

National and international medical ethics standards advise against any doctor in Connecticut forcing a feeding tube down his nose against his will.
