Filibuster Kills In-State Tuition for Illegal Immigrants

A bill that would have allowed illegal immigrants who attend high school in the state to pay the lower in-state college tuition rate died in the legislature’s Higher Education Committee Tuesday.
State Rep. Patricia Dillion, D-New Haven, said before the committee hearing Tuesday that the Republicans planned to filibuster the bill. She said the problem is there is no Parliamentarian rule to end a filibuster in committee.
In the end, there was never a debate on the bill which was placed by the chairs at the bottom of the agenda. Republicans talked the more than two dozen bills at the top of the agenda to death before the 5 p.m. deadline. It’s likely the bill could be ressurected through an Education Committee measure.

If you looked at the situation carefully, it was not just the Republicans who did not want this to be discussed. The Democrats purposely arranged that bill last so time would run out.

Anon,
I agree with you that's why I made sure to include that it was the chairs who placed it last on the agenda. In a Democratically controlled legislature the chairs could only be Democrats. Maybe I shouldn't be that subtle for those who may not understand the intricacies of the process. Thanks for your comment.
