Country music darling Miranda Lambert takes center stage at Mohegan Sun Arena on Feb. 4 as part of her Highway Vagabond tour. The “Mama’s Broken Heart” singer will bring the Academy of Country Music New Vocal Duo or Group of the Year Old Dominion in tow as her supporting act along with newcomer Aubrie Sellers. Lambert’s Connecticut show will be her last before the 35-date tour takes a three week hiatus and then resumes in Pennsylvania. During the off time, the 13-time CMA Award winner is expected to attend to the Grammy Awards as an anxious hopeful. She is nominated for Best Country Song and Best Country Solo Performance, both for her single, “Vice.”
The Book of Mormon in Hartford, Feb. 14-19
The Tony-winning, smash hit musical The Book of Mormon makes its Hartford debut on Valentine’s Day at the Bushnell’s Mortensen Hall. Written by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, The Book of Mormon is a bold and daring satire that follows two young Mormon missionaries who are sent to a remote Ugandan village to spread their beliefs.
Their new surroundings prove to be vastly different than the life they were used to in Utah, making their efforts to convert the reluctant villagers much more difficult than originally thought. In addition to religion and faith, the show is smart about addressing issues like AIDS, poverty, and third-world oppression in a lighthearted way. Be advised that The Book of Mormon is not suitable for all audiences given its raunchy dialogue and crude satirical subject matter. That being said, those who attend a performance with prior knowledge of the show’s general plot will be in for a rollicking two-and-a-half hours at the theater. The touring company is at the Bushnell for eight performances only.
Lukas Graham at the Oakdale, One Night Only
Breakout Danish pop band Lukas Graham will play The Dome at the Oakdale on Feb. 1 for one night only. Best known for their reflective No. 1 single “7 Years,” the group has had a whirlwind year topping charts around the world. Their musical style is versatile, as showcased throughout their debut, self-titled album. While the pop genre is Lukas Graham’s primary mainstay, they have effortlessly incorporated a variety of sounds in their songs, from the bouncy and soulful “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout Me” to the quirky “Mama Said,” which samples the chorus of “It’s The Hard-Knock Life” from Annie while slightly dipping into the R&B style at the same time. The band is nominated for three Grammys, including the coveted Record of the Year award for “7 Years.” Don’t miss out on your chance to see them while in the area!
Illusionist Michael Carbonaro in Stamford, Feb. 3
Michael Carbonaro, illusionist and star of TruTV’s The Carbonaro Effect brings his mystifying magic to Stamford’s Palace Theatre on Feb. 3. Given the nature of his hidden-camera television show that pranks unsuspecting citizens, Carbonaro’s live performances are run differently, but are nonetheless entertaining. In fact, the magician is a master of improvisation and seeks out the unpredictable in each show, guaranteeing that each audience is bound to get a unique show every time.
